Carley‘s new home

A bright spot last week at the HSGB was the arrival via email of several updates on recent U.S.
adoptions. Five month old Carley is shown with her new mom and                                                         big brother Max on her first golf cart ride. Carley's new family                                                         spotted her on our Petfinder page weeks ago; after countless                                                         emails and phone calls, we all decided it was a match made in                                                         heaven and off she went to Florida last Thursday. Max was lonely                                                         after his dog sibling died at 14 years old a few months ago and his                                                         parents realized he (and they) needed
a new baby in their lives.

Jazzi is enjoying living in a house instead of a yard or kennel, staying warm in New York and getting to know her big sisters Sammi and Potcake Cassie. Cassie was adopted by her family four years ago, through HSGB's partnership with SaveAPet in New York. Unbeknownst to us, Cassie had a serious heart defect that left undetected and untreated would likely have killed her within a year. SaveAPet raised the money for her life saving surgery, and she is now healthy and loving life. Her family hopes she will be a gracious potcake and accept her new little potcake sis, Jazzi!

They met Jazzi on a vacation trip to Grand Bahama in February. We just love people who spend the better part of a vacation day visiting our shelter! They fell in love with her, and finally last week, we were able to send her to her new home in New York.

We can't resist including a new picture of our Nina Simone, shown below, with one of her new best friends in Chicago. Neens, as she is now affectionately known, has endeared herself to everyone who meets her and has settled into her new home amazingly well. She is truly one of our most spectacular success stories. From hairless, sick, malnourished, terrified dog - to pampered, beloved family pet in the Windy City!  Click here to read her story.

We also were happy to send 19 puppies to three different rescues in Florida last week. Those 19 gorgeous puppies are assured of what they are not likely to find here; forever homes. The hardest part of our Operation Puppy LIft programme is deciding which puppies to send. Knowing the ones left behind may never get that second chance we want for them all.

While these happy endings certainly are amazing and provide us with a great deal of cheer and smiles, we wish there were more happy endings for more of our beautiful dogs and puppies.

In 2008, the HSGB took in 1290 animals. While we try hard to give every animal a chance, and we
have reduced our euthanasia rate considerably in the last four years, unfortunately many of our dogs do not find their forever homes. We have adopted an average of 25 dogs per year to loving homes in the U.S., thanks to our Petfinder site, www.gbhs.petfinder.com. Every life saved is cause for rejoicing for us, but at the same time, we are sad for the ones remaining here, ever hopeful.
